Au revoir France, Hullo London! - 1 July 2014

Farewell to St Saturnin
Posting this a month afterwards may result in some inaccuracies..,

Prior to leaving, Allan was smart enough to book us a taxi from Heathrow to our digs in Greenwich.

Anyway, we said our goodbyes to St. Saturnin and undertook the longish journey to Marseille.  Marseille is a real city, the second largest in France and quite a contrast to the perched villages we had become familiar with.  Still tricky to navigate but we managed to find a carpark building to base ourselves from.

Tourist trains

We hadn't researched Marseille as well as we probably should have and were wondering how we could make the most of our short time here.  Fortunately we'd parked next to a 'tourist train' that drove around the city with a guided commentary!  So off we went.

One of he first facts we found that Marseille is the home of bouillabaise the famous seafood stew.  Evidence was found everywhere.

Marseiille - out to sea
Marseille has been a significant port through the ages for France.  We were fortunate that as for most of our trip we had lovely weather with gorgeous blue skies.
Port - downtown

Our train ride took us around the port, up to the Notre Dame Cathedral and and around city - lasting just over an hour.

Notre Dame

After the tour we lunched by the port. with rather a grand looking seafood dish - although it didn't quite live up to it's expectations.  C'est la vie!

Seafood in Marseille
Being ever the careful tourists we arrived at the airport in plenty of time to drop of our rental car.  Unfortunately they spotted a minor scratch which they tried to get us to pay many Euro for.  We refused (with some trepidation).

Insurance shot
Regrettably our plane was many hours late which meant we arrived at Heathrow very very late.  Eventually our booked ride found us and we ended our trip on the continent.
